I absolutely could not wait to get home, upload these photos, and get to work. Last Saturday I spent two hours with these adorable twins. Those two hours were jam packed full of exploration, excitement, snacks, and even tears. When all was send and done I had close to a billion photos to look through. That’s right… a billion.

While you probably wouldn’t mind seeing nearly a billion photos of these cuties I’ll save you a bit of time and show you my most favorite few. And by few, as always, I mean a bunch.

20121020-collins-11.jpg
As the air was quite cool in the morning we began indoors inside the Guthrie Theatre.
20121020-collins-4.jpg
We went straight up to the Amber Lounge. The girls had some time to get comfortable and do some exploring.
20121020-collins-17.jpg
They were pretty interested in being held for a while, which is understandable. I was new and we were in a weird yellow room with giant windows.  Pretty strange, right?
20121020-collins-24.jpg
Soon the girls got a bit more comfortable and peered out the windows into the fog.
20121020-collins-39.jpg
Same eyebrow raised. :)
20121020-collins-98.jpg
This little one was pretty into doing her own thing.. and quite quickly!
20121020-collins-149.jpg
We made our way down to the fourth floor where everything was a bit more normal colored.
20121020-collins-210.jpg
There was so much outside to look at it. I love getting reflections in these windows. :)
20121020-collins-244.jpg
There are giant comfy black chairs to climb on throughout the theatre.
20121020-collins-258.jpg
We of course blew kisses.
20121020-collins-263.jpg
And looked out the windows some more.
20121020-collins-272.jpg
And constantly asked for more snack.
20121020-collins-311.jpg
And licked the windows.
20121020-collins-315.jpg
And wondered why window licking was happening. Ew.
20121020-collins-350.jpg
After the girls had about enough to exploring inside we went out, just past the Mill City Saturday market.
20121020-collins-351.jpg
We found this nice wall but the girls weren’t overly interested in looking at me.
20121020-collins-411.jpg
This little lady spoke to my heart by exploring the numerous rocks.
20121020-collins-429.jpg
This one was pretty pumped that I brought bubbles along.
20121020-collins-434.jpg
20121020-collins-453.jpg
We managed to get them together for a few seconds at a time.
20121020-collins-482.jpg
Though that didn’t mean they were actually going to do the same thing or look in the same direction.
20121020-collins-503.jpg
No comment. :)
20121020-collins-520.jpg
More snacks.
20121020-collins-598.jpg
I always get a few of these reaching for my camera shots. Love them. :)
20121020-collins-657.jpg
20121020-collins-666.jpg
:)
20121020-collins-688.jpg
The girls were nearing the end of their available attention and tolerance for me and my camera. We headed down to the boardwalk for a few more shots before calling it a day.

photographing Sophie over the weekend I had some extra time to spend with Olive. I traded services with Sophie’s mom again so I was able to photograph Olive while Tyler was having his massage and while Sophie was warming up as it was a very cold day!

Unlike you’d expect, I don’t take great photos of Olive very often. My camera is large and not the easiest thing to take along with me when it’s just me and Olive off on adventures along with whatever else we may need – extra clothes, snacks, etc. I’m quick to take photos of her with my iPhone but taking “formal” photos of her isn’t nearly as common. I jumped at the chance to squeeze it in the this weekend. :)

20121006-olive.jpg

The pumpkin patch that we stopped at up the road from their house was extremely windy!

20121006-olive-3.jpg

At this age it’s getting more and more difficult to get Olive to look at me for a photo. She doesn’t respond to the same “tricks” anymore.

20121006-olive-4.jpg

Sometimes I can catch her looking at something for a while.

20121006-olive-6.jpg

Now she takes direction to do things that might provide some nice opportunities, like kissing a pumpkin.

20121006-olive-12.jpg

Most of the time she looks the other way though.

20121006-olive-13.jpg

It’s been neat to have Olive growing along with my photography business so my techniques and strategies can always be morphing and expanding.

20121006-olive-21.jpg

Back at their house it was a lot less windy so I took Olive’s coat off for a little while.

20121006-olive-23.jpg

I asked her to smile, which is generally a photographer “no no”. I immediately got this face.

20121006-olive-24.jpg

But then she showed me a genuine smile and I got this nice little series that follows.

20121006-olive-25.jpg

20121006-olive-26.jpg

20121006-olive-27.jpg

20121006-olive-28.jpg

I plopped her in the middle of some tall lumpy grass and she carefully maneuvered her way back to me.

20121006-olive-32.jpg

20121006-olive-36.jpg

This is a typical Olive expression.

20121006-olive-41.jpg

20121006-olive-43.jpg

20121006-olive-44.jpg

I asked her to smell a flower. Again, being able to give her some tasks or direction has been helpful.

20121006-olive-46.jpg

20121006-olive-48.jpg

She was already a little tired and the day was definitely unusual so she zoned out every so often.

20121006-olive-50.jpg

And took a little break to lay down. :)

20121006-olive-51.jpg

Kind of looking like a big kid. Or a beaver. Or a big beaver.

20121006-olive-53.jpg

I had to keep this. Double chin beaver face. I think she has her two front teeth sticking out in 75% of her photos.

20121006-olive-57.jpg

This next series wasn’t set up by me. She started exploring the plants around her like it was her job.

20121006-olive-58.jpg

20121006-olive-59.jpg

This one makes me laugh.

We ended with Olive’s first hammock experience. After taking this photo I put my camera down and we snuggled next to each other and rocked back and forth before going inside for lunch.

Olive’s friend, Ethan, just turned two and had a great party over the weekend. Unfortunately our lovely Minnesota summer suddenly ended and the feelings of late fall were in full swing. Despite the shivers it seemed like everyone had a great time! I thought I would bring my camera along because I’ve noticed that parents never seem to remember or to find the time to take as many photos as they want. I didn’t take as many as I wanted to since I was there to enjoy the party and hang out with Olive but I captured some great moments, especially with the cupcakes. :)

Olive was ready to paaaaaarty:

As was Ethan:

Ethan tried his hand at the spinning helicopter things:

Amber made yummy gluten, dairy, and sugar free cupcakes:

Naomi modeled the birthday boy’s cupcake:

And threw in an Angry Bird’s tattoo:

Ethan seemed intrigued by the candles being lit:

TWO:

I like this series… You can probably hear the “fffffffftttt”:

Olive seemed intrigued:

Yet cautious:

20120922-ethan2-48.jpg

Diego seemed to be inspecting the cupcake as well:

20120922-ethan2-49.jpg

And considered the flavors splashing across his palate:

20120922-ethan2-53.jpg

20120922-ethan2-54.jpg

I asked Amber’s sister if she wanted a cupcake eating photo like the kids, she just laughed:

20120922-ethan2-55.jpg

Olive seemed interested in more:

20120922-ethan2-56.jpg

But was still thoughtful:

20120922-ethan2-58.jpg

Ethan was pretty darn excited:

20120922-ethan2-59.jpg

And opted for the handsfree approach as well:

And then he did this super cute thing:

20120922-ethan2-72.jpg

Amber’s mom attended the party via Skype from the Philippines. Some of the guests were a little confused about the talking compter:

20120922-ethan2-87.jpg

I took a bunch of gift opening photos but I’ll spare you and post a few highlights.

20120922-ethan2-93.jpg

Most of my photos had a big Olive in the way:

20120922-ethan2-95.jpg

Oh hey girls..

20120922-ethan2-99.jpg

Ethan was gifted one of the same Bibles that Olive has. He said “Jesus!” right after he opened it. I have a feeling his will have fewer bite marks than Olive’s..

20120922-ethan2-113.jpg

Amber made Ethan a busy book. Which reminds me I need to keep working on Olive’s!

Overall it was the best Angry Bird’s themed party I’ve ever been to!  hehehe.  It was a really good party.  Lots of fun!  And it was really neat to have been able to attend both his first and second birthday parties so far.  Actually it was neat to also visit him in the hospital just after he was born, too.  We go way back… ;)

Happy Birthday Ethan!!!

This family was so fun to meet! It turns out they live really close to me in north Minneapolis! We met at a little park in Brooklyn Center tucked behind the Community Center, surrounded by various highways and a rather unsuccessful pocket of strip malls. It’s a funny little part of Brooklyn Center that you would never go to if you didn’t have a big reason – this is probably why the strips malls are so unsuccessful. But that’s part of what makes this park great! It’s usually nearly empty! There is a small lake, a lawn for games, trees, paths, and a playground. It was a perfect spot to photograph an adorable 18 month old and his older siblings. Lots of chasing, running, crawling, and getting covered in wood chips were involved in the making of this session. :)

I’m trying to get much better at narrowing down my favorite photos. But again it proved to be quite difficult! This family was so adorable and incredibly photogenic. Without further ado.. here are some of my favorites:

20120909-ap.jpg

We started with some family photos with all of the siblings so the little guy could ease his way into the session.

He was pretty much ready to go right away. :)

We brought out the bubbles to see what kinds of expressions I could capture but he ran after them too quickly!  His big sister helped out.

It’s amazing how often it happens, and I know I’ve said it before, but I really enjoy photographing kids who are so similar in age to my Olive. :)

A few weeks ago I drove out to Annandale, MN with Tyler and Olive. They dropped me off at a lake home done a long and winding gravel road. There I met a large and extended family. We scoured their property for shady spots and I photographed numerous combinations of people and antsy kids for one and a half hours. I took over 1,000 photos! You can never be careful enough when dealing with such large groups, especially when there is such a large age range – include multiple kids under five.

It was fun and quite the adventure! Here are a few of my favorites of smaller groups.. and a dog!

Tyler and Olive drove around Annandale and found a beach and playground to enjoy while I was busy working. On the way home we stopped for an early Sunday dinner. :)

I have had the pleasure of photographing Claire twice in the past. I used to work with her mom at Fraser Child and Family Center, first in Minneapolis and then in Bloomington. She became pregnant shortly after I did so it was fun to share our experience and now I get to share in Claire’s life, too! We don’t do nearly as many play dates with our girls as we should though. Below are some of the highlights from our session at Centennial Lakes Park in Edina last weekend.
