Almost two weeks ago I photographed a very intimate wedding at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

Both the bride and groom flew in from out of state for their wedding day which made their wedding day the first day I met them! I typically prefer to schedule a face to face meeting with my wedding clients before their wedding and at their venue, if possible. But when working with out of state clients this, of course, is rarely possible.

I toured the venue the day before with the wedding coordinator so I knew that two other weddings were taking place there on the same day but when I spotted the bride I was sure she was the one. :)

We introduced each other and got to work – our time together was short and the weather wasn’t overly conducive to a bride in a wedding dress.

Here are a few of my favorites:

There is a big fountain on the Center grounds and just as we headed over there for photos the sun came out from behind the clouds. We eventually found ourselves in a decent lighting situation but the wind was blowing sprinkles on us from the fountain. It made for a few neat photos. :)

These were possibly the only few trees left with trees in all of the Twin Cities metro area.

The bride made genealogy trees for both herself and the groom.  During the ceremony their mothers were asked to come up and place them on the mantel.

The ceremony was quick, to the point, emotional, and quite entertaining.  :)

They literally tied the knot. :)

And sealed it with a kiss!

Congratulations!!  :)

I drove out to Cottage Grove to meet with a couple to review their wedding contract and do their engagement session. It was wonderful to meet them and to explore their wedding venue – Hope Glen Farm. There were quite a few neat photo spots. I can almost imagine their wedding already! We had a lot of fun and here are some of my favorite photos:

Congratulations C+K! I can’t wait to photograph your wedding in 2013!

photographing Sophie over the weekend I had some extra time to spend with Olive. I traded services with Sophie’s mom again so I was able to photograph Olive while Tyler was having his massage and while Sophie was warming up as it was a very cold day!

Unlike you’d expect, I don’t take great photos of Olive very often. My camera is large and not the easiest thing to take along with me when it’s just me and Olive off on adventures along with whatever else we may need – extra clothes, snacks, etc. I’m quick to take photos of her with my iPhone but taking “formal” photos of her isn’t nearly as common. I jumped at the chance to squeeze it in the this weekend. :)

The pumpkin patch that we stopped at up the road from their house was extremely windy!

20121006-olive-3.jpg

At this age it’s getting more and more difficult to get Olive to look at me for a photo. She doesn’t respond to the same “tricks” anymore.

20121006-olive-4.jpg

Sometimes I can catch her looking at something for a while.

20121006-olive-6.jpg

Now she takes direction to do things that might provide some nice opportunities, like kissing a pumpkin.

20121006-olive-12.jpg

Most of the time she looks the other way though.

20121006-olive-13.jpg

It’s been neat to have Olive growing along with my photography business so my techniques and strategies can always be morphing and expanding.

20121006-olive-21.jpg

Back at their house it was a lot less windy so I took Olive’s coat off for a little while.

20121006-olive-23.jpg

I asked her to smile, which is generally a photographer “no no”. I immediately got this face.

20121006-olive-24.jpg

But then she showed me a genuine smile and I got this nice little series that follows.

I plopped her in the middle of some tall lumpy grass and she carefully maneuvered her way back to me.

This is a typical Olive expression.

I asked her to smell a flower. Again, being able to give her some tasks or direction has been helpful.

20121006-olive-46.jpg

20121006-olive-48.jpg

She was already a little tired and the day was definitely unusual so she zoned out every so often.

20121006-olive-50.jpg

And took a little break to lay down. :)

20121006-olive-51.jpg

Kind of looking like a big kid. Or a beaver. Or a big beaver.

20121006-olive-53.jpg

I had to keep this. Double chin beaver face. I think she has her two front teeth sticking out in 75% of her photos.

20121006-olive-57.jpg

This next series wasn’t set up by me. She started exploring the plants around her like it was her job.

20121006-olive-59.jpg

This one makes me laugh.

We ended with Olive’s first hammock experience. After taking this photo I put my camera down and we snuggled next to each other and rocked back and forth before going inside for lunch.

I checked in with my little friend Sophie again earlier today. She is now 9 months old. Like I mentioned last time, it’s been fun to watch her grow. She’s now almost 10 months old.

Last fall I did a maternity session with her mama – we were able to enjoy ourselves outside in the crisp yet comfortable air. This year was quite different – not only was Sophie present Earth side today but the temperature was significantly cooler.

We attempted photos at a pumpkin patch near their home and had to keep hoping back into the car to warm up. Soon we headed back to their house for lunch and our services trade (massages for our anniversary!) and went back out again for more photos.

A few weeks ago I drove out to Annandale, MN with Tyler and Olive. They dropped me off at a lake home done a long and winding gravel road. There I met a large and extended family. We scoured their property for shady spots and I photographed numerous combinations of people and antsy kids for one and a half hours. I took over 1,000 photos! You can never be careful enough when dealing with such large groups, especially when there is such a large age range – include multiple kids under five.

It was fun and quite the adventure! Here are a few of my favorites of smaller groups.. and a dog!

Tyler and Olive drove around Annandale and found a beach and playground to enjoy while I was busy working. On the way home we stopped for an early Sunday dinner. :)

A couple of weeks ago I photographed a beautiful wedding at the University Club in downtown St. Paul, MN. The afternoon was fast paced and involved many locations. I began at the bride’s mother’s home while the bride and her bridesmaids took care of their finishing touches. We then headed through rush hour traffic and construction to the wedding venue where the ladies took a little more time to prepare themselves. I checked in with the guys upstairs in the penthouse before meeting the ladies in a lovely stairwell before beginning the ceremony. The ceremony was sweet and quick. When it was over the wedding party and myself piled into a limo and headed to Rice Park in downtown St. Paul and then over the Summit Hill for photographs before heading back to the venue to meet with family before heading upstairs the ballroom for the reception. It makes me dizzy just thinking about everything we managed to cram into four hours! The afternoon was a whirlwind, the wedding party seemed to have a really great time, and the bride’s wedding dress was stunning! Below are some of my favorite shots! :)

A couple of weeks ago I photographed my first wedding not on land. I jumped at the opportunity to photograph a wedding on a boat. :) I drove out to Stillwater, MN where I met Janell and Craig along with their family and friends. We snapped some formal and group shots before boarding the Jubilee II for a couple of hours. The ceremony was simple and lovely, the food was delicious, and the party was just getting started when the boat came back to shore and I headed home.
